The Revue, October 2020

While we’ve all made the most of the outdoors in whichever way we could over the course of this strange summer, the arrival of a distinct autumn chill in the last few days has us thinking, once again, about a solid indoors strategy. We continue, as always, to bring you some no-coat-necessary entertainment. This month we discover the stories behind a 30-course tasting menu in remote Northern Sweden, wish a saxophone legend a happy 80th birthday, and get to know one of modernism’s greatest duos. Dive in.

watch: At The Noyes House – Inside the Connecticut home of Eliot Noyes

The award-winning Noyes’ family residence in New Canaan, Connecticut opens its doors for a group exhibition entitled At The Noyes House: Blum & Poe, Mendes Wood DM and Object & Thing. Architect Eliot Noyes began his career in the office of Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer, later becoming Director of the Industrial Design department at MoMA. His family residence, completed in 1955, has played home to a personal collection of works from the likes of Calder, Miro and Picasso. This latest display brings in a fresh, mixed media selection from Sheila Hicks, Faye Toogood and Green River Project LLC among others. With music courtesy of Ryuichi Sakamoto, this beautifully mellow film features the pieces in situ, allowing a peek into one of the great East Coast mid-century homes.

read: Terence Conran’s First Home, House & Garden

A design world giant, the late Sir Terence Conran’s influence on the British home cannot be underestimated, dragging interiors from post-war drab to something altogether more uplifting. Revisiting his wildly popular House Book series you’re reminded that good taste rarely goes out of fashion, many of the images either strikingly modern or comfortingly retro. In this short interview from a 1957 issue of House & Garden, Terence and wife Shirley discuss setting up their first home together, with incredible photography from James Gardiner.

Playing alongside the likes of John and Alice Coltrane, Don Cherry and Sun Ra over the years, this latest outing sees Pharoah share billing with old friend, long-time collaborator and fellow saxophonist Azar Lawrence, a reunion not to be missed. eat: Fäviken: 4015 Days Beginning to End, Magnus Nilsson

Swedish chef Magnus Nilsson closed the doors on two-Michelin-starred restaurant Fäviken in December 2019. Located in a remote corner of Northern Sweden, the restaurant was famed for its 30-course marathon of a tasting menu, featuring unfamiliar ingredients that had been foraged, fished and hunted in the surrounding estate. Feeling the project had run its course, Nilsson opted to end on a high, the 24-seat rural cabin fully-booked up until its last day. This 324-page volume chronologically lists every incredible dish served at Fäviken, “a practical cookbook, a candid memoir, and a primer for anyone wishing to reach the very top of the culinary arts.”

visit: A Mechanised Thought, Amba Sayal-Bennett, indigo+madder Gallery

Independent Deptford gallery indigo+madder present a mixed media body of new works from London-based artist Amba Sayal-Bennett, the first UK solo excursion for the Royal College of Art student. A Mechanised Thought includes a series of three-dimensional metal sculptures referencing industrial machinery; precise laser cut-outs, coated surfaces and folded, bended and welded panels are combined with organic parts, to produce a hybridised aesthetic. Alongside these pieces, beautiful, colour-rich drawings are presented as decorative blueprints, borrowing "the language of design, diagrammatics, architecture, and the language of plans/things that are yet to come." The exhibition launches both online and in-person 16 October.

A visual biography of two of the 20th century’s greatest artists, Equal and Unequal tracks the couple from their first meeting at the Bauhaus in 1922 to their migration to America to teach at California’s legendary Black Mountain College alongside the likes of Walter Gropius and Buckminster Fuller. Written by Nicholas Fox Weber, trustee of the Albers Foundation, this weighty volume includes over 750 illustrations featuring unseen paintings from Josef and textile and printmaking pieces by Anni.
