Welcoming in a new month, we launch the Drake’s Revue, a carefully chosen collection of global goings on from the worlds of art, design, food, travel and just about everything and anything in between.
SEE – Basil Beattie, Cause & Effect, Hales Gallery London
Early abstract expressionism revisited in this must-see show over at East London’s Hales Gallery. Royal Academy graduate Basil Beattie has spent the past 60 years developing his own dynamic take on this school of painting, becoming a leading figure in post-war Britain’s booming contemporary art scene. Cause & Effect brings together some of the artist’s most energetic works from the early 1980s, a meeting of riotous colour, bold technique and big ideas.
Until 14 March, Hales London, 7 Bethnal Green Road, London, E1 6LA
DRINK – Moto Bar, London
Do one thing and do it well is the ethos behind Moto, a Covent Garden bar focusing solely on drinks made by small producers in Japan. Specialists in sake, this compact venue serves up a selection of ‘Sake Flights’ introducing newcomers to the wonderful world of rice wine, alongside Japanese snacks such as Hiyayakko (chilled tofu) and Nasu no Nibitashi (simmered aubergine) to keep you on the straight and narrow.
7 Maiden Lane, WC2E, 7NA
READ - The Irish Cookbook, Jp McMahon, Phaidon
Possibly worth it for the cover alone, Galway chef Jp McMahon takes on traditional and lesser-known Irish dishes in this weighty volume set to launch this month. 480 recipes celebrate the country’s incredible produce from both land and sea. Expect to find old favourites as well as modern takes, a reminder of this island’s incredible contemporary food scene.
Released 27 February, available for pre-order.
VISIT - Kettle's Yard House Tour, Cambridge.
A curator at the Tate during the 1920s, Jim Ede, alongside wife Helen, an art teacher, spent 15 years at the incredible Kettle’s Yard, their (relatively) small but perfectly formed home, steps away from Magdalene College, Cambridge. Living side by side with great modernist art from the likes of Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Miro, the house, still in its original form, opens its doors to visitors 6 days a week, offering lessons in restrained elegance and the beauty of a well-worn wooden floor.
Castle Street, Cambridge, CB3 0AQ
